This posting contains some of the most disgusting, gross out-tech and squirreling you can imagine. It will stand your hair on end. Mark Rathbun got away with it for a a time because he refused to turn in his “ethics interviews” and “auditing sessions” on numerous individuals and blatantly intimidated and denigrated any Case Supervisor or Cramming Officer who caught wind of what he might be up to. He also instigated, through false reports, the removal of those who suspected his out-tech.
Here it is:
- Rathbun told a preclear to put the cans down and then in rage grabbed the person by the shirt, dragged him out of his chair and then slammed him up against a wall, demanding that the person start confessing.
- Rathbun took a “break” from having a person on the meter and took him outside, where he slapped the person across the head because “he wasn’t cooperating” and wanted “to soften him up,” to quote Rathbun.
- Rathbun walked into an interview being done by another interviewer and threw the interviewee up against the wall and demanded that they start confessing. When the person went in a shock and could not talk, Rathbun grabbed the person by the throat and demanded that they “confess!” When the person who was doing the interview stood up to stop Rathbun, he screamed at her, backing her up against a wall. When the interviewer wrote a report, Rathbun got a hold of it, tore it up in front of her face and then proceeded to cave her in.
- Rathbun screamed at someone he had on the meter, demanding “Cough up your crimes,” and screamed, “You had better start talking or you are for it,” and then yelled loudly while demanding “What is the withhold?” for about 5 minutes!
- Rathbun actually took a person he was doing an “ethics interview” with and pushed him out of their chair and up against a wall and screamed at him to confess to some crime that he “knew” the person committed.
- Probably one of the most unbelievable technical high crimes is when Rathbun stormed into a co-audit session and grabbed the PC by the shirt, dragged him out of the chair, across the auditing table and then across two other tables, knocking over anything and everything. He didn’t stop there. He threw the person up against the wall, started screaming “Start talking, motherfucker” and then shoved the person against a wall and finally threw him through two doors and down a flight of stairs.
- Rathbun physically punched a person in the eye because the person was not confessing to something that Rathbun wanted him to confess to.

Mark "Marty" Rathbun 
Man, what a crazy sicko, this Marty Rathbun character. God forbid he should go to the extreme and kill someone in the name of treatment, but I can see exactly how that could happen. It sure makes me appreciate the enormous attention COB puts on getting all Scientologists to study, word-clear and apply Keeping Scientology Working and Knowledge Report policies.
It’s hard to read this article. I hate that this brutal nutcase was able to hide amongst our own for so long. At the same time I am proud that when someone like this is discovered, unlike what has occurred in other ministries, Scientology does not hesitate to let it be known. I am blown away by the accuracy of LRH’s statement. What a clear and terrible demonstration Marty Rathbun is of the dangerous nature of squirrels.
Marty Rathbun is a brutal animal, which in my book puts him in the same category as a psychiatrist.
You’re right! The entire time I’ve been reading this blog I’ve had this recurring picture of Bedlam. I guess it is, as you say, the absolute brutality of Marty Rathbun’s treatment of those he took an oath to help that is so reminiscent of the behavior of psychiatrists.
I’ll bet if you find out who his PCs are now and see how they are doing, you’re going to find a bunch of disgruntled people who leave Scientology. That seems to be his intended product.
You’re right – my hair *is* standing on end, and it’s shoulder length! I like the comment putting Marty Rathbun in the same category as a psych. This is the kind of abuse one expects to find in a shock ward. Thank God he was finally ferreted out.
The real concern is what damage Rathbun will do now to people who are so unfortunate as to fall into his hands for “auditing.”
How psychotic he is thinking he can use force and violence to get some result on a PC.

This is more of a Fascist interrogation technique than a confessional procedure – Rathbun has set new standards for squirrelling…
Rathbun is a WILD squirrel. The Mayo-type squirrel at least tried to hide behind the appearance of tech. Rathbun uses force instead of TRs, and tries to use the meter as though it were a lie detector. He’s clearly in a Nazi interrogator valence.
These incidents described are serious violations of the Auditors Code and are clearly the work of someone who is a psycho.
I believe that these incidents are true based on my own experience with the guy, which while not as extreme, did have some of the same elements of un-C/S’d, non-standard withhold pulling and fishing for false purposes. I believe that it was done by Marty for the purpose of caving in the PC and making the PC feel terrible about his “overts” rather than relieving the person of the need to feel shame and helping them to become responsible.
I cannot image a more reverse way of “auditing” someone.
And that was Marty’s style of “auditing” when he was to some great degree restrained. I can well imagine the misery he is visiting upon his “clients” now.
It is hard for me to believe that with a statement like Marty made that, “I ruined I don’t know how many cases” that anyone could think that he is anything but a squirrel.
He is not someone you would entrust your case to. It reminds me of the point in the HCOB The Anti-Social Personality The Anti-Scientologist which describes the trait:
“Many antisocial persons will freely confess to the most alarming crimes when forced to do so but will have no faintest sense of responsibility for them.”
“Their actions have little or nothing to do with their own volition. Things “just happened.”
“They have no sense of correct causation and particularly cannot feel any sense of remorse or shame therefore.”
If you take a look at some of the admissions that Marty has made, you’ll see this trait fits totally. He admits to perjury, lying, destroying evidence, destroying people’s cases and yet this somehow has nothing to do with him. He blames everything on COB. It was all somehow COB’s fault. It’s nuts. People used to try and blame LRH for everything that ever went down in any organization anywhere and Marty tries to do the same.
A great point. Rathbun and Rinder are such vivid live demos of anti-social personalities that it takes a bit to really grasp it. Even if you don’t know these guys and don’t care, just as an exercise it’s worth sitting down with the Ethics book and comparing each point to these guys so that you can really see for yourself how they measure up.
Rathbun has a long history of self-admitted abuse of people on admin lines and in auditing as well. He resorts to force rather than actually knowing the Tech and applying it. I’ve seen psychos like Rathbun squirrelling the tech before. They end up using force because they can’t grasp the tech and get results with it, then resort to trying forcing things to go their way. Ultimately, they are found out and rooted out.
After a while, Rathbun just couldn’t keep covering up his crimes. Too many people became aware of how evil he is. His masquerade just wouldn’t hold up as more and more people were touched by his out-tech and out-admin. Now he’s out of the Church trying to finish his plans to destroy it, just like he destroys everything else around him.

This such a powerful statement. It really demonstrates how much compassion the old man had for humankind, and how well he understood that we cannot afford to abandon responsibility for anyone, even those who would destroy us.
