Mark "Marty" Rathbun the bully

Mark Rathbun

MARTY RATHBUN ROUTINELY ACTED LIKE A BULLY TOWARDS HIS FELLOW STAFF MEMBERS

“I engaged in a campaign to covertly and systematically take out and undermine any executive or staff who might expose me.” – Mark “Marty” Rathbun

I have known Marty Rathbun since 1984.

In the entire time that I knew Rathbun as a Church staff member, which was from 1984 until he deserted the Church in 2004, he was always working either on external affairs of the Church or internal investigations, such as to find out why a project or program was overdue.  He chronically fouled up legal and other external matters he was meant to handle and, on ethics matters within the Church, instead of applying the standard investigatory procedures as laid out by Mr. Hubbard in Scientology policies, Rathbun would often use intimidation and physical violence, though the Scientology ethics codes are clearly against such actions.  He routinely acted like a bully towards his fellow staff members, using physical force and threats of physical force to intimidate people—usually on persons who were of a smaller physical size than he.

Marty Rathbun’s behavior was irrational and bizarre in the extreme. In one instance, as I was leaving an office and stepping onto the sidewalk, Rathbun walked up to me.  I thought he was coming up to say something to me, and I paused in front of him.  Without any preamble or warning, he punched me in the jaw with his fist.  I fell back against the screen door of the building and stumbled sideways. I was not only in pain but in shock from the surprise of it.  He then turned and walked away without saying a word.  I thought he must have gone completely psychotic.

In another instance I observed Rathbun in a rage, throwing an executive up against a file cabinet repeatedly while screaming at him.  He then stormed out of the office, leaving the executive shaken, upset and confused.  Rathbun was not investigating anything or doing anything even vaguely resembling an application of Scientology ethics policy, nor did his action facilitate getting a project completed or a report submitted.  He was terrorizing an executive, period.

I witnessed Marty Rathbun stride up to Mike Rinder while Rinder was speaking to a group of about 40 other staff, and violently tackle him to the floor.  Once Rathbun had him down on the floor, he straddled his body and proceeded to choke Rinder, while asking him some question I could not discern. Rathbun kept on choking Rinder, while also pounding his head against the floor repeatedly and demanding that he answer the question, but Rinder was unable to answer Rathbun’s questioning because he was being choked and could not speak.  His face was contorted and very red.  Rathbun still hadn’t let go of him and finally several men had to forcibly pull him off.  At that point Rathbun let Rinder go, and he stood up.  Rinder’s face and neck were very red, he was shaking and he was still having trouble both breathing and speaking.

Looking back on this I note the pattern is that Rathbun conducted his acts of physical violence when Mr. Miscavige was away from the base.

Staff were in terror of Rathbun and usually did not report his psychotic behavior out of fear of reprisal.

Rathbun had very minimal technical training, and what he did have was done on a correction program.  He trained to Class V in 1995 and asserted that he had interned.  In Scientology policy, certificates are provisional for one year until one does the internship for that level—meaning auditing under professional technical staff to become competent—and if the auditor does not do the internship in that allotted time, his certificate expires.  Following his departure I found that Rathbun never did a single internship and the certificates for the courses he did in 1995 expired a year later.  He continued to audit without a valid certificate, a High Crime in Scientology. He further pretended he had trained on an advanced level (Class IX) when he had never completed the course, another High Crime.

In 2003, after continuing to cause even more trouble on external matters, Rathbun was dismissed from Religious Technology Center altogether by Mr. Miscavige.

Based on reports that had accumulated on Rathbun, I reviewed case folders and session reports of staff he had “audited” and these showed he had been altering the technology, inventing his own versions of auditing procedures and refusing to apply it as written by L. Ron Hubbard (called squirreling). Rathbun committed violations of the Auditor’s Code, which are some of the most serious High Crimes that can be committed in the Scientology religion.  These acts included scolding and belittling a person in during that person’s auditing, getting angry at the person—including screaming at and threatening him during session—attempting to run auditing sessions late at night when the person was too tired and even walking into an auditing room while an auditing session was taking place and berating both the auditor and the person who was being audited.  In a single time period of only a few weeks he violated 15 out of a total of 29 clauses of the Auditor’s Code.

Rathbun was covert in his squirreling and hid what he was doing by avoiding sending the person to the examiner after a session, falsely reporting in the case folder what he’d done in session and often not turning in the folder to a Case Supervisor for inspection—in one instance giving 30 consecutive sessions to one person without sending the folder to a Case Supervisor. The technical violations he committed are criminal and are of the level of crime that, per the Scientology Justice Codes, can result in a person being expelled and barred from the Church.

Despite everything, he was still given a chance to straighten himself out and start following the technology and policy as written by L. Ron Hubbard, but he refused.  His pretended authority was now gone and he hated it. And, in 2004, he again ran away.

Squirrel then, squirrel now.

  1. Such a violent person will not change. I bet he still treats people like that.

  2. “He trained to Class V in 1995 and asserted that he had interned. It is a classic characteristic of Suppressive Persons that they are unable to complete a cycle of action. Of course, this is only one of those characteristics that Rathbun displays. Altering communications to make them worse, wrong-targetting, the sheer inability to duplicate Scientology Tech and Administrative procedures and principles, and on and on.

I think we can predict that Rathbun will commit crimes in the world around him that land him in the hands of the police!

He’ll probably try to strangle a meter maid at some point and won’t be able to hide behind a facade of “authority.”

  3. I have noticed that physically abusive people stick together – Rathbun, Rinder – others I have known too. I had a relative who abused women and noticed that the worse he became the more he surrounded himself with “friends” who were also physically and mentally abusive to people. It’s a strange phenomenon and to, me such a key indicator of a crazy person that whenever I see any sign of it in someone I come to know, I end the friendship right there. It’s terrible, though, when these people have power and disconnecting from them isn’t so easy. I really appreciate all those good and effective staff members who stuck it out and helped our churches prosper in spite of Rathbun and Rinder.

    • Yes, let’s hear it for the quiet courage of the many staff members who withstood Rat and Rin’s (Rathbun and Rinder’s) abuse, stood strong, and continued the mission. We have them to thank for our new ideal orgs!

  4. >>Mark Rathbun told the St. Petersburg Times: “I had my share of people that I slapped around too.”<<

I like these not-so-clever attempts to absolve himself by coughing up his crimes while in the same breath pointing the finger at someone else. It's so obvious this is stuff Rathbun and his buddy Rinder ALONE did, I mean they confessed to it over and over. Did they think someone would lose the paperwork??

  5. “Bully” seems like a mild description of this guy and his actions. The level of intentional intimidation, degradations of others and actual violence that seem to be his stock-in-trade describe an outright psychotic.
The Church is fortunate indeed to be free of this parasite. Let him cling to some other organization – like the SP Times – for his power, as he truly has none of his own. He’ll bring down whoever he’s connected with, that’s for certain.

  6. Rathbun is a creepy guy, and not to be trusted. He will never be straightforward and honest, and the robots who follow him as well as the entrenched freedom-haters who welcome him will sometime soon find that out.
I think even the moral worms of “Anonymous” know this already and have begun to separate themselves from him.
    How low can one go?

  7. Marty was and still is bully. Look at what he is doing now. He is breaking up families and creating havoc.

He audited a girl and the next thing she does is to break up with her husband. She then becomes the girl friend of Marty’s long time “buddy”, yes the very “buddy” he almost chocked to death.

Marty then deprogrammed the son of long term Scientologists. And what did that son do? He abandoned his parents.

Marty is very good in writing black propaganda pieces that make his selected targets look bad and he look like a saint.

Marty is not a Scientologist and never will be, his actions speak for themselves.

    • This is the behavior of a psych. How squirrel can a person get?

      • You’re right – Rathbun has clearly become the psych he’s pretended to oppose for so long. No wonder he’s such a squirrel. He obviously never had any personal gain from Scientology, just thrived on the position of power he managed to get himself into.

  8. Wow – can you imagine being trapped in an auditing room with this squirrel??

  9. A history lesson.

Did you know that after the United States entered the war (World War II), the Axis powers (Germany, Italy and Japan) sought to weaken the morale of the Allied armed forces and civilian populations by radio propaganda? The British traitor William Joyce broadcast from Germany under the sardonic name “Lord Haw Haw”; the American poet Ezra Pound broadcast for the Fascist cause from Italy; U.S. forces in the South Pacific became familiar with the voice of Iva Ikuko Toguri D’Aquino, a native Californian of Japanese descent, who broadcast from Japan as “Tokyo Rose.”

I think that the current Marty Rathbun and Mike Rinder squirrel show on the net is deserving of a name too.

    I propose Rat & Rin.

    • I love Rat & Rin! – reminds me of those two crazed cartoon characters, Ren and Stimpy. As I recall, they were products of a lab experiment gone bad.

  11. I am happy to see something going out stating the facts about this dude. But I think it’s pertinent to list who or at least initials as “Staff Member” could mean anyone, you know and it comes across as “Hmmmm….”

    • Sorry, I disagree. Staff have the right to protect their identity just like everyone else and I don’t see what difference initials would make. I think we know by now how vicious Rathbun can be and now that there is no ethical group around him day and night to at least demand some self restraint, he – and the SPs he associates with – are capable of anything. In evidence, I recommend a quick virtual field trip to http://www.religiousfreedomwatch.org/intolerance-hate/anonymous/
      — and note, amongst other acts of hatred, the death threats against staff.

  12. “…he interrogated me at length as to what I was up to. He screamed and attempted to intimidate me by waving a baseball bat around and slamming it on a file cabinet just inches away from me with the seeming intent to scare the daylights out of me into some sort of confession.”

Rathbun probably thought that by only slamming a baseball bat near you he was being gentle and in-ethics. He COULD have been punching or choking you, but was withholding himself.

  13. Amazing criminal behavior by Rathbun, and accusing DM of this type of violence is just what a criminal would do.

“I witnessed Marty Rathbun stride up to Mike Rinder while Rinder was speaking to a group of about 40 other staff, and violently tackle him to the floor. 14. Rathbun is just an overt squirrel. He isn’t even subtle about it, like some other squirrels.

“These acts included scolding and belittling a person in during that person’s auditing, getting angry at the person—including screaming at and threatening him during session—attempting to run auditing sessions late at night when the person was too tired and even walking into an auditing room while an auditing session was taking place and berating both the auditor and the person who was being audited…”

  15. Rathbun exhibits just about all the characteristics of an anti-social personality, and he isn’t subtle about it. He throws in few extra characteristics as well, such as “routine psychotic breaks” under the guise of “being a senior executive.”

  16. Yes, that’s a creative one, isn’t it?? If nothing else, Marty has show a real flair for the creative in the mix of blatant lies peppered with just the tiniest modicum of truth that he has fed to S.P. Times.

  17. “I witnessed Marty Rathbun stride up to Mike Rinder while Rinder was speaking to a group of about 40 other staff, and violently tackle him to the floor.”
Rathbun’s violence to Rinder doesn’t get enough attention. Rinder went into Rathbun’s SP valence and started behaving the same way. Then, both of these morons go public accusing OTHERS of what they themselves have done, beating and intimidating people to get what they couldn’t get sanely because they’re too squirrelly to get or apply any tech.

    • They really are a circus, these two. Well, one day they will beat the crap out of each other in the lobby Mark Marty Rathbun’s Center for Squirrel Therapy, their public will run for the door, and that will be the end of them. Even they know that.

  18. “…Rathbun would often use intimidation and physical violence, though the Scientology ethics codes are clearly against such actions.”

This is the key point that is being missed. Rathbun routinely violated the Scientology ethics codes, and because of the position he managed to get himself into, was able to use nefarious methods to keep his actions from being properly reported to those who could and did ultimately get rid of him. His psycho violence will not be missed in the Church.

    • I agree. The few destructive individuals who have managed, over the years, to con their way into positions of power, are *always* eventually found and weeded out. They waste our valuable time, and that is crime enough, but we always recover from them, even though heaven knows how many hundreds of staff are overworked in the effort.

  19. Love the new photo of Mark “Marty” Rathbun on the home page. Did anyone notice the “sweetness and light” valence this vicious bully has adopted in order to con his followers? What a con man this guy is!
